Causes for Hip Pain and How Physiotherapy Can Help

Hip pain can be draining and make doing everyday things more difficult. Here are some causes of hip pain and how a physiotherapist can help alleviate that pain and increased mobility.

TOP TEN CAUSES OF HIP PAIN:

1. Bursitis. Inflammation of the fluid-filled sacs that cushion bones, increasing friction around a joint.
2. Osteoarthritis. This is one of the most common types of arthritis, caused by inflammation surrounding the bones and joints. The inflammation gradually deteriorates the cartilage, causing pain.
3. Hip fracture. This is a break in the upper quarter of the thigh bone (femur), which can be serious and require immediate surgery. Osteoporosis is one of the main causes of hip fracture.
4. Tendonitis. Tendonitis is the inflammation of a tendon. It is a common form of sports injury. An inflamed tendon might rupture, creating a need for surgery.
5. Osteonecrosis. This occurs when bone tissue dies as a result of lack of blood supply to the affected area. It is a rare condition.
6. Septic Arthritis. A very painful infection within joints.
7. Hernias. Pain in the hips and difficulty twisting can be a sign of this medical condition in the pubic joint, usually affecting athletes.
8. Sclerosis of the sciatic nerve. This is irritation or inflammation of the sciatic nerve, which is the largest nerve in the human body.
9. Slipped capital femoral epiphysis. An uncommon occurrence among adolescents, the head of the hip bone slips backward in the joint and separates from the main part of the hip bone.
10. Meralgia parasthetica. This is caused by the compression of a large sensory nerve in the thigh.

CAUSES OF HIP PAIN

Physiotherapists are trained and qualified to treat various ailments and resulting pain. Applications like massage, heat, and specific physical exercises will ease pain and stimulate healing. Your physiotherapist will determine the cause of your hip pain and discuss a treatment plan with you. A physiotherapist works to reach the cause of your specific hip pain and resolve it, whereas many general physicians only treat the symptoms.

PARC of Ontario has certified Physiotherapists to help relieve you of hip pain and provide a return to normal activities. Call us today: (905) 579-9938.
