Effects of Bad Posture

Poor posture can result in a myriad of problems, including back pain and sore muscles. This is because the prolonged practice of bad posture during day-to-day activities results in certain muscles tightening, shortening, or weakening. Bad posture eventually leads to long-term health complications which can affect our bodies and mind as we age.

Here are some effects of poor posture:

  • Pain and soreness

Improper posture (like slouching while sitting or standing) causes our muscles to work harder than necessary. It also adds pressure to the spine, resulting in lower back pain and soreness.

  • Poor digestion

Prolonged sitting (while slouching or slumping our shoulders) compresses digestive organs, which affects metabolism.

  • Poor circulation

People who cross their legs while they sit increase the pressure of fluids passing through our bodies, resulting in spider (or varicose) veins. This also increases the possibility of developing cardiovascular disease.

  • Poor breathing

Poor posture while sitting causes the ribcage and sternum to press against the diaphragm and abdominal muscles. This leads to shortened breath or reduced lung capacity.

  • Fatigue and negative mood

Prolonged bad posture puts added stress on muscles and joints. This leads to feeling tired and less likely to complete work. Constantly feeling tired or exhausted can also lead to feeling low and moody.

The negative effects of prolonged bad posture impact both mind and body due to the pressure it places on joints, muscles, and internal organs. The more stress on our muscles, the more likely we are to experience negative physical effects later in life. To combat these problems, corrective measures should be taken. During work, repetitive motion without breaks can lead to additional strain on muscles. Break the monotony of repetitive movements by taking occasional breaks and practicing brief stretching exercises.

For some people, it may take more than just willpower to correct posture. Those with affected spines may require corrective braces to keep backs in proper position. People who suffer the negative effects of bad posture may benefit from physiotherapy treatment to combat soreness while correcting other immediate problems.
