Bad Posture Habits = Spinal Pressure
Most of us don’t understand the damage bad posture can do to our bodies over time. It puts unnecessary stress on our spines and necks, resulting in extreme pain. Improving posture doesn’t just prevent pain; it also can get rid of headaches and negative thoughts. Here are some habits to avoid or overcome:
Tilting Your Head down
A new term (called “text neck”) has been coined because of the damage caused by tilting your head down to view electronic devices. If you constantly spend time in this position, your cervical spine suffers stress from the weight of your head. Over time, major health problems can arise from this downward head tilt. To avoid problems, keep electronic devices at eye level.
High Heels
Despite what we may have heard in the 1980s, it is not “better to look good than to feel good.” High heels can affect the entire body in a negative way. Crushed toes, constricted calves and pressure on joints will only increase pain in your later years. Choose lower heels, and only wear “high heels” infrequently. A padded insole can help. Also, do calf stretching exercises to increase flexibility and lengthen your Achilles tendon.
Stomach Sleeping
Sleeping on your belly straightens the natural curve of your spine and puts a strain on your neck for hours. If you regularly sleep on your stomach, place a pillow under your lower abdomen and try sleeping without a pillow. Better yet — train yourself to sleep on your side. It’s also good for your nighttime breathing.
